‘We really need marketing access of our products’, said one of farmers in Tawangmangu Sub-district, Karanganyar Regency, Central Java, Indonesia.
I am Juli Purnomo, 21, currently studying agribusiness at Sebelas Maret University (UNS), Surakarta, and active in IAAS Indonesia LC UNS. IAAS is one of the biggest international association of students in agriculture in the world.
I am really interested in small farmers, community and youth empowerment, community development, small-to-medium enterprise (SMEs) development, and agri-tourism.
The first problem of local agricultural products nowadays in rural areas, especially in Karanganyar Regency, is while there many agricultural products and commodities, they not marketed well. Producers are really confused about what should they do and what would optimize the natural resources in agriculture.
Focused on these crucial problems, I, with IAAS UNS, will facilitate the communities through a Sunday Market Festival.
Sunday Market Festival is the programme to promote and sell agricultural products on Sunday in one strategic spot. I will source these agricultural products from three sub-districts in Karanganyar Regency: Tawangmangu, Ngargoyoso, and Karangpandan, which have same strategic location with many tourism potential every weekend.
The festival will help the farmers to increase the product quality, raising the sustainability of agricultural production, creating the centre of agricultural products in Karanganyar Regency, and creating an agro-tourism market.
This festival will be run in Griya Tawang, which is one of the most strategic locations for tourism in Tawangmangu Sub-district.
Why a Sunday Market Festival?
This programme is really needed because of lack of information and technology (social media) for SMEs in rural areas.
On the other hand, the farmers need youths to help make their products sustainability. By helping the farmers with partnership programmes with IAAS UNS, it will help students in agricultural and related sciences to understand the condition of small farmers, agricultural products development, and SME problems.
Sunday Market Festival will have some important aspects:
- It is 4E (Empowerment, Entrepreneurship, Education, and Environment).
- Community and youth empowerment will give positive impact for developing small farmers and bringing back the youth to the agriculture sector.
- Entrepreneurship will create young agri-preneurs and improving skill and product qualities of SMEs.
- Education will be given to the youth and children about agriculture to preserve agriculture sustainability in the future.
- Meanwhile the environment will be preserved through empowering integrated and sustainable farming by undersrtanding organic farming.
How it works?
The first step is building a team and partnership. Partnership here make a great coordination with farmer groups, agricultural products entrepreneurs, local government, department of agriculture, trade, and SMEs, culture and tourism, IAAS UNS, IAAS Indonesia, and related communities.
The team will be spread to three sub-districts and villages (Tawangmangu, Ngargoyoso, Karangpandan). We will collect the agricultural products data and connecting with local farmers and entrepreneurs to join Sunday Market Festival and integrate it into marketing media.
The agricultural products database will be informed detail to the website of Sunday Market Festival, and will be posted to all social media, such as Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and related media. This festival in the future will be new destinations for all tourists in Karanganyar Regency.
It will be liked agricultural products exhibition, promotion, place for meeting the buyers, consumers, and producers, and create the sovereignty of agricultural products in that place.
The first month is used for introducing the festival, followed by Sunday Market Festival continuously. Positioning and branding always will be improved by the team.
There are some ways will be conducted in the development steps. It is improving the quality of agricultural products, supply chain management, and agricultural products production. Then empowering the youth, communities, also entrepreneurs in all sub-district about social media, website, and technology assistance with IAAS youths, and agricultural extension.
In addition, Information systems will be used to predict the Agricultural products demand. So, the farmers can produce the suitable commodities.
How I believe it will work
The similar project already done one time with the name Market Village Festival in Griya Tawang, which is the place in Tawangmangu Sub-district through the integration of community empowerment of undergraduate students of Sebelas Maret University.
Unfortunately, the festival of agricultural products was not continued. That is why I am already creating a partnership with Griya Tawang Tourism for the festival place.
Then partnership with many partners. It is the head of farmers group in Karanganyar Regency, Mr Darmono, the founder of community empowerment in Tawangmangu Sub-district, and IAAS UNS which also has Village Concept Project in Ngargoyoso Sub-district, my community empowerment and agri-tourism research in Karangpandan Regency.
In addition, partnership with partner medias in around Karanganyar Regency, and the expert already representative of organic farming and agriculture faculties in Sebelas Maret University.
Based on that festival of Agricultural products, I will use the USD 5,000 grant with detail of:

This programme will be successfully organized if there are participation in the communities. It can bring the positive benefit of them and make them to do a continuous improvement in farming technique, creating agricultural products, and increasing the economic welfare of the village.
We are already aware of of the food security issue in 2050. Sunday Market Festival will have a great mission to increase food sustainability and food security. Furthermore, it will increase the quality and quantity of agricultural products in rural areas, stimulate many young agri-preneurs, and decreasing the number of urbanization of the village.

Such a great question. The feedbacks are from griya tawang itself as the place for the festival, they can brand their place to be more popular because of will be held of the festival every weekend, for the government, it help them to make a success for each government program to build a village, and increase small farmer welfare.

Thanks Tia for the question. It will be held continuously. In the first month when the socialization, we will make an agreement with all stakeholders. If we can held it every Sunday , it will be better, but for the trial will be held one time every two weeks, but will followed every Sunday after we already have many stakeholder.

yes it’s really important. Collaboration with farmers, I will start by contacting the head of farmers in Karanganyar Regency, and actually I already contact him, then with his help and our action to come to each sub-district, we will socialize the Sunday Market Festival program. The problem is about how can the youths together can build this program into success. The sustainability is the key, we can make a partnership and an agreement so the program will run sustainability.

Thank You Mrs. Agustin. It’s a great question. That is why, because of the characteristic of agricultural products. I with my team, will held this festival with online and offline system market, The online will sell the agro-industry products, and offline market is for the fresh products, such as organic fruits and vegetables. It will be promoted in online and social media first, then the buyers and consumers can visit the Sunday Market Festival to get it. In the other hand, the financial management will be operated by the team first to make easy for the farmers.
i’m glad that somebody would create an innovative movement, and it’s my own friend ^^, true Indonesia is blessed with rich nature (fertile soils and diverse plants resource for agriculture), farmer could plant anything from the basic commodities into exotic agriculture products, but we still lack in managing the market and often farmers face hard times to sell the products due to the poor access and middleman involvement. This might not new in many countries, or perhaps several region in Indonesia nowadays, but we need to expand this positive actions….best of luck!
