YAP proposal #238: Doorstep Diagnostic Services for Milk Quality Production (Hemanth Gowda, India)

colletion of milk samples at farmers door stepI am Dr Hemanth Gowda, 31, from Karnataka, India. I am postgraduate student of veterinary science, presently employed as Assistant Professor at Karnataka Veterinary Animal and Fisheries Science University, Bidar. My project location is in Keregalli Village, Hassan District, Karnataka state, Southern India.

I was born and raised in a South Indian village where livestock are a part of the way of life. I am involved in research and extension activities pertaining to animal management, diseases, and production.

My goal is rural-oriented and farmer-friendly. Considering the prevailing low-quality milk production from our milk production system, I am proposing diagnostic services for our farmers at a cheaper cost.

India ranks first in the world in milk production with 137 million tonnes of milk produced in 2014–15. Dairying in India is a classic example of cooperative federation and societies and production by the masses.

In spite being at top in quantity, the quality of milk is very poor. Because of low quality, the international export of milk or milk products is not possible for us.

The main reason for producing low quality milk in India is a disease condition called mastitis, either clinical or subclinical. In India, the economic losses due to mastitis have increased about 115-fold in the last five decades.

According to National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, New Delhi (2013), the annual economic loss incurred by the dairy industry from udder infections is USD 900 million, with th loss of 650 million USD (70–80%) attributed to subclinical mastitis.

Lack of awareness, delay in detection of sub-clinical mastitis, unhygienic milking practices, small diverse production systems, inadequate treatment, etc.—these are some of the important contributing factors to a higher incidence of subclinical mastitis, leading to economic losses to farmers.

Subclinical mastitis is more prevalent than clinical, ranging from 19% to 78%. In the subclinical-mastitis-affected animals, the milk yield reduces considerably: milk yield loss ranges from 100 to 500 kg per cow per lactation.

When subclinical mastitis occurs, additional losses result from discard of abnormal milk, and the cost of drugs and veterinary services. The losses are either due to temporary or permanent loss of milk production, poor milk quality, discarding of milk from affected animals prior to or after antibiotic treatment, and premature culling of the cow or reduced productive life of animals.

Also the milk from the suffering animal generally carries a microbial load that renders it unsuitable for human consumption or the export of dairy products.

In spite of several steps taken by the government and milk federations to improve the quality of milk, the main causal factor of subclinical mastitis has not yet been controlled. The reasons for failure in control of subclinical mastitis are prevailing small dairy units and lack of regular screening of animals, automated systems, infrastructure, manpower, and knowledge at farmer level.

It is, therefore, important to undertake a plan to prevent and control subclinical mastitis. At this juncture, providing milk quality diagnostic services at the milk collection centres of milk federations for diagnosis of subclinical mastitis helps in quality milk production.

Hence, the loss to farmers due to subclinical mastitis is avoided, and the profit percentage obtained by export of milk and its products will be of additional benefits to farmers and also provide job opportunities and livelihood for village rural youths.

My entrepreneurial plan is to establish a milk quality diagnostic laboratory worth of USD 5,000 (building USD 1,500, instrumentation USD 2,500, reagents and glassware USD 1,000) at a nearby place, covering around 12 cooperative milk collection centres.

A technician trained in milk quality analysis will be employed. The collection of milk for quality analysis is done by the technician once a fortnight from each of the 12 different collection centres.

Quality anaysis at lab.JPEG

The milk is checked for subclinical mastitis at the laboratory and report submitted to the respective societies. These, in turn, inform the farmers to get their animals treated by the treatment wing of milk federations or veterinarians.

The diagnostic centre can analyse an average of 3,000 samples a month. The charge of diagnostic services for the analysis is USD 0.20 per sample, corresponding to monthly revenue of USD 600. The cost of analysis is paid by respective cooperative milk societies. This monthly net income generated is going to be used for bearing the monthly expenses of service and technician.

The milk federation willingly accepts the proposal, as it is impossible for them to carry out the diagnostic service with the existing technical manpower. Enabling outsourcing for diagnosis reduces their economic burden too.

The informal consent with federation to take up diagnostic services for quality analysis has been accepted by local milk federation. In the long run, the number of diagnostic centres can be expanded, covering all the collection centres and help in quality milk production. Thus the enterprise becomes self sustained.

Saying ‘Yes!’ to milk quality diagnostic services is going to be the next slogan for milk producers and farmers.

  1. Nice one Hemanth. All the best for the good initiative. Even i do have plan for a milk diary, probably you can help me out with the diagnostics. Thanks.

  2. Good work Dr if you want a help there is small lab coming up in my place I may be of some usefull

  3. University Academic people education, research ,extension etc should reach poor farmers
    Lab to field
    …Gowda u r doing good work
    All the best

  4. Dr Hemanna gowda, it is my opinion or thoughts only
1.Educate the mastitis management & its control at root level – by Distributing the leaf pamphlets/brochures(udder health, dry ambiance, milking equipment, personal hygiene & dry cow management)
2.Tools for the detection of disease include in line milk analyzers and behavior monitoring systems (both physiological and behavioral changes should be considered when monitoring for disease)
    3. Automation tools – for effective therapy
    4. Antibiotic sensitivity tests regularly at root level – Farmer’s desk
    5. You can finalise your Advances in diagnostics at your institute or laboratory
    6. Also estimate Milk economics

    1. Sure, your suggestions are appropriate for control of subclinical mastitis. Definitely in long run I will include your ideas in my diagnostic labs, thereby much more effectively can prevent economic loss to farmers

      1. sir, I am sorry if I am wrong, but according to what I think, I think sir, u should u increase the analysis cost to atleast rs 20 from rs12, if u want to sustain the the project for long.I think sir it is not possible to get around 3000 milk samples from just 12 co operative societies, u may at most get 1500 samples in month max. so the total income may come around 20000, which may leave u with very little net income, which may be a problem for sustaining it for long.I may have calculated it wrong but dats wat I got from my calculations.

    2. Definitely sir, all your views are to the mark, will be taken in implementing the proposal

  5. Really a wonderful work that actually what our Indian farmers need there are many high molecular work related projects which ends without any fruits to farmers this project in my perception will serve the poor farmers as the work is based on detection of sub clinical mastitis at farmers level even many farmers can understand what are the diseases and they themselves can screen the mastitis

  6. Yes country like India definitely need milk analysis systems. Which can work at doorstep of a farmer’s serves its motto even better. India stands first in world milk production yet the quality is noy upto the western countries quality check holds. So I agree with the author, need for a quick, adoptive, innovative milk analysis system development.

    1. Field oriented work that helps in production of quality milk…..farmers will definitely benefited frm dis..gud luck Dr.Hemanth

  7. It is really a good project. It will help the famers and milkmen a lot. Hope this ideal clicks at the earliest and the benefits reach the farming community. Bedre Manjunath, AIR, Hassan

  8. Project proposal namely “Diagnostic services for milk quality production ” by Dr Hemanth Gowda ; seems farmer’s friendly, cost effective, enables to rule out sub clinical mastitis at early stage and helps to produce quality milk.

  9. Sub clinical mastitis diagnosis is need of the hour, as farmers loose the milk production by 10-20% in subclinical cases. The commercial plan looks viable. All the very best.

  10. Great project as it reaches farmers at doorstep… Early diagnosis of mastitis is very critical as the losses are huge… Hope this project will help producing India quality milk and may contribute towards the GDP…. Hoping for the best

  11. Congratulations sir….really this idea will definitely work in bringing up our nation as no 1 in milk quality as well…all the very best for ur ideology and effort….

  12. Good idea sir…it shld be implemented as early as possible… and 1 querry s that is it functional only @ co operative society level???

    1. Milk federations have already established a well system for milk collection, so getting samples at collection centres from farmers is very easy and cost of analysis can be recovered from respective society at once

  13. yes.. the proposal s really reliable and it does improve our milk quality at both
    national n international markets..

  14. Congratulations sir….this s a great idea to bring up our nation no 1 in milk quality as well….and even a good step as a veterinarian to improve the quality of milk…all the very best for ur ideology n effort..

  15. This project wil really encourage rural poor to sustain their livelihood and to enhance their profit…….very nice initiative sir

  16. Good initiation for field work in support of farmers…. But how much does it costs for testing sample….???

    1. Each sample testing costs between 8 to 12 indian rupees, including collection and analysis at lab

  17. Very good initiative Dr Hemanthgowda. It is really helpful for the dairy industry, please go ahead all the very best.

  18. really a gud one!! most needed research!! atleast after this process we can b assured of drinking best quality milk.!!

  23. As the recent studies by the dept of Veterinary Public Health & Epidemiology, Veterinary College, Hassan reveal, the incidence of SCM in & around Hassan range from 35 to 60 % and the economic losses due to the disease is yet to be accounted for. Its effect on milk quality is immense. The need of the hour is improvement in milk quality rather than simply thrusting on enhanced production. This project should be supported so that we can bridge the gap between quantity & quality of milk produced in India.

  24. Very good work. Everyday the quality of milk we are drinking is not up to the standard(U.S.standard).Had it been better if antibiotic residue detection test also included.Good move in educating and getting quality of milk.

  25. Goudre good work, It’s a great opportunity for you to reach and teach poor farmers about mastitis and it’s prevention methodology. Best of Luck Goudre…

  26. Dr.Hemanth… its good research… but it should reach poor farmers … I hope u will do it… all d best..

  30. OK good work….. plz update criteria ….. for analysing….. tests adopted as well as cut off values for the tests adopted

    1. Individual milk samples from each milk society is tested twice in a month as routine screening.
      Cmt is the first test
      Next is scc
      Then tested using milk analyser
Cost of each samples arranges between 10 to 15rupees depending on distance from analysis lab
In a month 3000 samples can be tested

  31. Good approach towards the clean milk production, we need such initiatives for the benefit of the farmers and aswell as the economy of the country

  32. Subclinical mastitis diagnisis is a need of the hour at field level, this proposal is highly helpful in clean milk production.

    1. Yes, definitely. Milk federation will be definitely helped for quality milk production, helping them at lower expenditure for diagnosing clinical mastitis.
Also, income generated is in turn used for further strengthening laboratory.

  33. Yes.. This can help in enhancing the quality of the milk and surely enable us in producing disease free milk. Good quality milk definitely gets better value which in turn profitable for our farmers.. Cheers!!👍👍👍

  34. Good job Hemanna, All the best & try to educate more & more farmers on this. I will forward this to my contacts also. India is lacking in quality product in food & many other categories. We all should support for need of quality food production atleast for our upcoming generation.

  35. dear hemanna, really a nice project, till these many days we were bothered about enhancing the quantity of the milk production but now there is great need for production of the quality milk as well. so in this regard your efforts will ensure society to have quality milk. A door step quality assessment and timely advise to the farmers is most essential. All the best and get going…..

  36. This is an good start up for economic boost for poor farmer of India……………….

  38. A great idea doc go head. As it not only increases the quality of the milk it will also generate employment oppurtunity.

  39. Dr Hemanth Gowda very good concept, it will help to identify subclinical mastitis and to treat subclinical madtitis at rural level. It also important to to clean milk production, Good initiative dr, Keep going

  40. Dr Hemanth Gowda very good initiative, it will help to identify subclinical mastitis and to treat it at rural level, also aid in clean milk production, keep going,

  41. expecting this type of projects more… nowadays cost for the treatment of mastitis is more, its difficult afford by so many farmers in rural area. Your project hels to diagnose sub clinical mastitis, so that we can avoid great loss to the farmer…
If this proposal accepts r not, u don’t leave your step…Keep going.

  42. Its very useful project sir,,,,,,, it will be helpful for the farmers and a good step for making india no 1 in quality milk production also

  43. Very good idea sir this will definitely increases the farmers income and may reach the international milk quality standards @ the international market
It helps in decreasing the microbial load in the milk and makes it more
    eligible for human consumption

  44. Sub clinical mastitis is a biggest problem in rural India. Checking it is need of the hour to improve the quality and thereby marketing opportunity to the milk.. This thus has indirect impact on whole dairy production system. Good one.

  45. Earlier days farmers are getting this facility only in dairy. Where as here it is very innovative and helpful for them. Nice one. All the best

  46. Good initiative all the best for your future endeavour Hemmana gowda. Hope it reaches all poor farmer in India.

  47. Much needed step ( like this ) towards Diagnosis of sub clinical mastitis at farmers level.

This initiate if made into reality will definitely help the farmers and the milk cooperatives.

  48. Hi Gowdre. Good thought and me doing Farmer Feild School this year on Clean Milk Production in which main aim is to get quality milk. It wil be of great useful. All the best

surely the farmers will be benefited.

  51. Good aim…….farmer friendly and also aid in clean milk production and helps to increase Indian economy.Expecting more projects……..ALL THE BEST

  52. It is a very good project. It may reduce the microbial load in the milk and also improve the quality of milk for the human consumption.
Main thing is, it gives the knowledge to farmers about mastitis especially sub clinical mastitis. We are expecting more projects like this.

  53. It’s very good Dr.gowda.For this I suggest you regarding subclinical mastitis diagnosis draminski mastitis detector, delaval cell counter are very useful.

    1. Yes sir, you are correct. Those instruments will be helpful in our diagnosis.the available versions Will be procured for my lab

  54. Its a good initiative to needy persons regarding better quality milk production to farmers…… Go ahead sir all the best

  55. Its a good initiative to needy persons for better quality milk production to farmers.,, go ahead sir,,, All the best

  56. I thank each one my friends, colleagues and students for encouraging me to go ahead with my project. I do my best for farmers.

  57. Good project.the mastitis is a major challenge for farmers so it will surely help the farmers

    1. Informal meeting with local kmf has yielded good response, willing to accept on pilot scale.

  58. It is a revolutionary idea. It is going to support diary farmers a lot.
    ‘All the best.’

  59. Its a better issue to be raised …i think we will get some better ideas of improvement of milk in all aspects from this project sir , all the best

  60. By this , we will get some of the new ideas in all aspect of improvement of milk , and helps directly or indirectly the farmers who may or may not be involved , all the best sir !!! Hoping for best

  61. Dr.Hemanth this is going to be a great work @ field level in quality milk production. 3000 samples per month and involvement and willingness of milk producing socities is a revolutionary step in bring lab to land. always appreciate ur innovative ideas and best of luck for ur project.

  62. A good going for the development of the country as it helps to export the milk and milk products to other countries…and mainly it creates awareness to the farmers. A good and useful project . ALL THE BEST…

  63. Good initiative towards food safety sir. Think this idea promotes the health of induviduals . All the best sir…

  64. Dr Hemanagowda your work is appreciable but my suggestion is that being worked in different field i am now have few experience to share
First you try to educated farmer with regard to quality
Being indian pooulation greedy to money they are using unethical mehods to increases milk yield
With regard to your university extension activity must be more sound and vibrant

Stop making burden to farmer by doing this kind of extra expenditure

    1. Sir, thanks for your suggestions. Just with extension activity bringing awareness about mastitis feathers no improvement. In spite of knowledge, negligence to know the animal condition is there. Also our Cost of testing is very meager per animal wise. In addition to our service, in further will include much extension programmes about mastitis

  65. good initiative…& it is farmers frndly helps to get good quality milk in high amount &helps to increase in indian economy..great job

  66. Dear hemanth congratulations for the gr8 work, this is really very good initiative to meet our Milk Quality to the Global Standards, and there by which strengthens the economy of individual dairy farmers and the respective state Milk Fedrations where presently they are struggling to achieve Standard Quality Milk to compit with Global market.

  67. Directly or indirectly it will educate the farmers who are involved and its a very important issue to be raised, everyone will get some of knowledge , from this project ,all the best sir ,hoping for best !

  68. Need of the hour dr hemannna … Grt work .. For the benefit of dairy farmers as well as for the benefit of human health nice project .. Keep going … Best of luck and i wish it will be a role model and it will be adopted everywhere in India…

  69. Good concept Hemanth. I am confident that you can bring a change and improve the yield with this project. All the best.

  70. Very innovative way Dr Hemanth Gowda sir. I may be repeating the same as above comments as I could not go through all..
In my view your entrepreneurial plan should accompany the Extension education to the farmers regarding Mastitis in whole.. As being in field since five years I have observed farmers using old crude methods to treat mastitis STILL .. Educating them wil fetch a lot in the field which we are doing to a limited extent at present.. All the very best for ur Innovative concept ..
    And also include ABST.

    1. Definitely in upgrading the service, will be included with ABST and awareness programmes at farmers level

  71. Excellent job sir. Of course we have to improve our quality of milk at producers level. Prevention is better than cure hence have to train our producers for clean milk production. Once animal deseased by mastitis we cant recover the milk quality. We can identify and reject, this loss makes farmers still poor. Instead of this prevent attacking of staphylococcus and streptococci sps. And already one kit is available in market in which we can indentify mastitis infected animal milk.

    1. Thanks for in-depth information about diagnosis. I will taken into.account while implementation of proposal

  72. A very good innovative idea in improving the quality of milk production to help poor and marginal farmers. Hope this effort will become successful. All the best….

  73. Excellent job sir. Of course we have to improve our quality of milk at producers level. Prevention is better than cure hence have to train our producers for clean milk production. Once animal deseased by mastitis we can’t recover the milk quality. We can identify and reject, this loss makes farmers still poor. Instead of this, prevent attacking of stephylococcus and streptococcus sps to animal.

  74. Very innovative and beneficial work for the welfare of the farming community.

  75. This is really an amazing work…It’ll help our poor nd marginal farmers tremendously nd help in increasing our milk export wid no rejection….hope dis project goes a long way

  76. It will be a inspiration for many students to come out with new proposal…………all the best…….keep going

  77. Good initiative also create awareness to farmers about clean milk production so that they themselves will start quality check and then sell the product. Good luck

  78. The project contains good ideas. I feel the subclinical condition of mastitis is not just the condition due to inflammation of mammary glands or infection but false positive results are expected when hygienic milking is not carried out. So, it’s better to plan the strategies to rule out such false positive results and tests proposed to employ need better accuracy and consistency… Anyway, good efforts are made with some innovative ideas. Good luck… Dr. Sahadev, Prof. & Head, Dept of VGO, veterinary college, Hassan.

    1. Sure sir, while screening animals much care will be taken to avoid false positive cases.

  79. This is an amazing work…It’ll help our poor farmers tremendously and help our country export more n more milk with no rejection….hope dis project goes a long way

  80. This is an amazing work…It’ll help our poor farmers tremendously and help our country export more n more milk with no restrictions…hope this project goes a long way

  81. This is an amazing work…It’ll help our poor farmers tremendously and help increase our milk export with no restrictions…hope this project goes a long way.

  82. It’s a farmer friendly project which is going to play an important role in future India…. all the Best…

  83. Very nice of you hemanth sir.. One of my friend also from the same field speak good words about the project.. I forwarded ur contact.. Good luck.. Our team always with you.. Thank you

  84. Well….Its a good one. Hope it benefits our farmers to the maximum. And all the best for this project.

  85. Good idea, and a well-planned project.
Early detection (in infected herds/households) is the first step toward prevention (in neighboring herds/households).
If it works around a cluster of producers, it could be extended to other clusters/districts.
    All the best.

  86. Dear Hemanth gowda, Thanks for the good initiative however veterinary practitioner has a wide variety of diagnostic options for solving milk quality problems. High milk bacterial counts generally suggest problems with milking equipment or cooling but practitioners should be aware of the ability of Streptococci spp. to cause transient increases in bacterial numbers of bulk milk. Investigation of increased bacterial counts should include a series of tests to help isolate the source of the bacteria. The use of bulk milk and individual cow SCC values is fundamental to the production of high quality milk. It is important however that veterinarians understand the limitations of these tests when they are used to identify intramammary infections. The CMT has been used for more than 50-years and continues to be the most accurate cowside screening test for subclinical mastitis. Methodological differences contribute to confusion in
interpretation of individual and bulk tank milk cultures and antibiotic susceptibility
testing but the use of these techniques is necessary to fully understand mastitis problems.

    1. Sir.
You are absolutely correct. Definitely at each stage much methodical steps will be taken for diagnosing clinical mastitis

    Regards,

  88. Good proposal Dr. Hemanth. Your idea of improving the quality and yield of milk for the benefit of the farmer is appreciable. This proposal is worth being funded . I appreciate your sincere efforts. Wish you good luck.

  89. An innovative idea of milk quality and quality control is need to insure the Public health. At the same time the health of the milch animals can be assessed by their product( e.g. Milk, Meat) .Sir, your work would assure the testing of quality of milk, in turn diagnosis of Sub-clinical mastitis will help a lot to the rural population for their economic growth and promoting health of man & Animals. Go ahead and all the best.
