YAP proposal #121: Spirulina Cultivation to Address Malnutrition (Mizero Jean Felix, Rwanda)

project-pictures

My name is Mizero Jean Felix, 28, from Rwanda: a thousand-hills country, located in East Central Africa. Rwanda is a small country with about 13 million people and is classified as developing. I have a bachelor’s degree (2010) in food science and technologies (FST) from the Kigali Institute of Science and Technologies (KIST).

To be awarded a bachelor’s degree, I conducted a nutrition-related project: Nutritional status of preschool children and its relationship to gender household headship difference. At the end of my research, I found that my scope was not focused on the source of nutritious foods which could be found in Rwanda. This challenged me while I was asking the questions related to a balanced diet formulation and composition, which could be used for combatting malnutrition disorders observed in some households.

In 2012, I was hired by a local organization known as Initiative Pour la Promotion de la Famille et du Genre (IPFG). Here, I have a mission to develop low-cost products, to be used to treat nutritional disorders and promote local food autonomy. This pushes me to think about the food supplement known as Spirulina platensis. Spirulina is a microscopic blue algae, cultivated easily at home and with high protein content—twice that found in soybeans and three times that in beef. But, it is not in the scope of the project which I was hired to supervise.

Later, I thought about a project: Spirulina cultivation and development related products—a project which will improve the nutritional status of citizens, and promote climate change adaptation and mitigation

I would like to develop this project mainly by involving community to:

Lift the socio-economic status of vulnerable persons in the region where I live. This will reduce the rate of stunted children, nutritional disorders for lactating women, and generate income for people working on the farm and in the processing unit of dry Spirulina.

Develop products and technologies that could be used in other regions and food industries. This means that Spirulina could be used as a natural food additive for preparing a balanced diet for poor people, as well as natural food supplements for food products manufactured in my country and East Africa.

To attend to the above objectives, the project will be based on local realities and advocated by reference to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), numbers 1, 2 and 3 on sustainable food security and healthy people.

We will promote the six global targets/2025 of the World health Organization (WHO) that state:

  • 40% reduction in the number of children under-five who are stunted
  • 50% reduction of anaemia in women of reproductive age
  • 30% reduction in low birth weight
  • No increase in childhood overweight
  • Increase the rate of exclusive breastfeeding in the first six months up to at least 50%
  • Reduce and maintain childhood wasting to less than 5%

The project beneficiaries will be classified and determined based on the group age’s nutritional requirements but also on nutritional deficiency disorders observed. The involvement of local authorities will also help to expand the project in different regions.

My innovations and scientific research will be based on the formulation of a mixed product which will include the cereals, legumes, and Spirulina—a high-protein crop. As I said, I have developed composite flour of cereals and legumes (maize, red sorghum, wheat, and roasted soybean) eaten as porridge by all persons from six months. This product developed earlier did not fight effectively the malnutrition disorders, but I hope that after formulating new products referring to the Recommended Dietary allowances (RDA) should contribute more to combat malnutrition disorders.

The key steps for implementing this project are the following:

  • Development of the project referring to the project cycle life
  • Stakeholder mapping and preparing the first contact
  • Defining clearly the project outcomes based on the ideas collected from stakeholders
  • Installation of the demonstration plot of cultivated Spirulina and the manual drying facilities for obtaining the dry matter of Spirulina
  • Community mobilization on the WHO global target/2025 and the impact of Spirulina for combatting malnutrition
  • Identification of the vulnerable people (children under five years and lactating women) who will use Spirulina as a food supplements, where their nutritional status will be monitored at three months.
  • Success story development and advocating the impact of Spirulina intake with other types of food to the amelioration of the nutritional status of those vulnerable.
  • Commercial products development and marketing plan.
  • Community mobilisation about Home cultivation of Spirulina and its naturally consumption

A grant of USD 5,000 will be used for the following activities:

  • USD 2,115 will be used to install the demonstration plot and manual drying facilities, as I already have the land
  • USD 700 will be used for salaries of three permanent employees and one temporary employee, about six months as a basic salaries, so that the project will be monitored effectively
  • USD 530 will be used to monitor the nutritional status of ten vulnerable persons in sixty days,
  • USD 455 will be used for products development mainly the packaging materials
  • USD 360 helps to establish small quality testing especially the moisture content of dried Spirulina so that the shelf-life will be long enough
  • USD 500 will be used for determining the nutritional composition of the dried matter of Spirulina by an authorized local agency for quality control
  • USD 340 will be used into the products marketing and distribution

Furthermore, the project will collect sales revenues from sold products to be used as revolving funds. I will collaborate with the health centre, hospitals, and other nutrition centres to approach the low-nutrition vulnerable.

Voting for me, helps the World health Organization (WHO) achieve the 2025 targets.

  19. Congratulations, Rwanda still needs the innovation projects for combating malnutrition among the children under five. Big up!

    1. @Aphrodis those are some tips showing that malnutrition affecting persons who still have low incomes and the current foods used are still costing high:
*No commercial nutritious food available in Rwanda for low cost .
*FAO Statistics, 2014-2016, showing that 31,6% (3,9 M of people in Rwanda) are under nourished , where they presents differents signs of malnutrition.
      * Acute malnutrition among children aged between 6 month and 5 years is the only nutrition indicator within acceptable limits(3,6%). the prevelance of underweight (12%) is classified as poor. the prevalence of chronic malnutrition disorders among chidren of this age has remained very high in Rwanda over the last 20 yers and still stands at 43% making our country one of the the countries with the highest chronic malnutrition rates( Comprehensive Food Security and Vulnerability Analysis and Nutrition Survey ,CFSVA, 2012).
so keep sharing the project and help each other to combat malnutrition

  28. What is spirulina? SAID BY WHO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Spirulina is an edible cyanobacterium, a small blue-green alga. It can be eaten by humans and other animals, and it’s been around for about 3 billion years. The name actually means “tiny spring”. This is because its simple cells form long strands that look similar to a coiled spring. There are several different species of spirulina , but two of the most well-known and more extensively researched are Arthrospira platensis and Arthrospira maxima[1].

Today, spirulina is cultivated worldwide and consumed by millions of people around the world for its great nutritional value and numerous health benefits. It is supported as an ideal food and dietary supplement for the 21st century by the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) of the United Nations[2].

  29. HISTORICAL USE OF SPIRULINA

Spirulina was much appreciated by the Aztecs. It grew wild in the great lakes of Central Mexico. Small cakes of spirulina were sold in the marketplace in Tenochtitlan (Mexico City) and were highly prized[3]. The Aztecs called them tecuitlatl. They collected it from the surface of the lakes using nets and then they left the wet paste in the sun to dry. According to the conquistadors travel journals, tecuitlatl was made into a kind of bread and tasted something like cheese. They didn’t care for it much themselves, but the Aztecs found it delicious.

Spirulina may have also been used as a source of nutrition by the Toltecs and the Mayas. There is evidence that the Mayas cultivated it in the same waterways they used for crop irrigation[4].

The Kanembu tribe, who live along the shores of Lake Chad in north-central Africa, have harvested and eaten the microalga for centuries. It is one of their main sources of protein. After it is collected and dried, it turns in a form of biscuit called dihé [5]. This is used in many dishes and is also eaten by pregnant women in order to protect their unborn child from evil magic.

  30. DID U KNOW THIS ABOUT SPIRULINA ?

Spirulina’s Nutritional Profile and Health Benefits

    Protein and amino acids

Spirulina’s nutritional profile is quite impressive. First of all, it is full of protein, a rare occurrence in plants. Spirulina contains about 60% (51-71%) of protein. This is a complete protein which means it contains all of the essential amino acids (histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, valine). It also provides 10 non essential amino acids (alanine, arginie, cystine, glutamic acid, aspartic acid, glycine, proline, serine and tyrosine).

    Fatty acid content

Spirulina is rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) and it also contains, among others, alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), linoleic acid (LA), stearidonic acid (SDA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and arachidonic acid (AA)[1]. Fatty acids can’t be produced in our body so we have to take them from food sources. Our body needs them for many different fuctions and they are essential for cell health, brain and nerve function, and heart health.

    Vitamins

It also has a high vitamin content, including vitamin A (in the form of b-carotene), a great deal of vitamin K, vitamin D, E, the very important vitamins B1, B2, B3 and B6. It contains pseudovitamin B12, which is similar to the actual B12, but it is biologically inactive in humans[6].

    Minerals

Spirulina has a substantial mineral content with a respectable amount of calcium and iron, as well as phosphorus, magnesium, zinc, selenium and manganese.

Spirulina also provides biotin, an important enzyme related to some complex B vitamins. Spirulina is also a rich source of other enzymes, RNA, DNA, sulfolipids, glycogen and other nutrients that could be beneficial for us.

    Phytonutrients

A substantial amount of phytonutrients can be found in spirulina. Chlorophyll gives it the characteristic dark green colour. There is also a unique blend of carotenoids, zeaxanthin, superoxide dismutase (SOD), polyphenols and, most importantly, phycocyanin.

    Antioxidant Protection

Phycocyanin is the major antioxidant costituent in spirulina[7]. There are several antioxidant mechanisms in this amazing microalga. One of them is scavenging the free radicals that move around and cause damage in various tissues (liver, lung, brain). In addition, it can inhibit lipid peroxidation, a chemical process that damages cell membranes. Sprirulina also modulates various enzymes with metabolizing, detoxifying and antioxidant properties.

Spirulina can counter the oxidative damage caused in the heart and kidneys by some drugs through the free radical generation mechanism[7]. It can also protect against metal induced oxidative damage. In one study, the use of spirulina prevents skeletal muscle damage caused by physical exercise[8].

Spirulina’s Antiviral Activity and Immune Boosting

Spirulina contains several biological active molecules which have been shown to inhibit several viruses such as HIV-1, HSV-1, HSV-2, HCMV, influenza type A, measles, etc[9]. Spirulina’s compounds intefere with the viruses’ ability to bind to particular cell receptors and infect them.

In studies carried out in vitro (test tubes) and in animals it has been shown that spirulina is able to stimulate a variety of immune functions. It can help with the production of antibodies and inhibit inflammation[7]. Other preliminary studies show that spirulina has the ability to inhibit histamine release which causes allergic rhinitis[10].

More in vivo studies are needed in order to fully understand the effects of spirulina in human health, but what we know so far looks promising.

    Spirulina and Weight Loss

Spirulina offers great assistance in weight management. Taken before meals, it can help you feel fuller without overeating and not as hungry between meals. It is a natural whole food with no conservatives or synthetic ingredients, a much better choice than diet pills.

Spirulina curbs our hunger by keeping our blood glucose and amino acid levels stable. It is easily digested, since it doesn’t have the hard cell wall that other plants have. What’s more, it is low-fat, low-calorie and very low in cholesterol.

Spirulina offers the body the nutrients it needs to operate properly. It boosts our energy levels, and this also help us exercise, a necessary part of a weight loss programme. Spirulina can be a great asset in a healthy and balanced diet.

Spirulina can be used as a whole food as well as a dietary supplement. It comes in the form of tablets, capsules, flakes and powder. Make sure you follow the recommended dosage at all times. In my personal experience, you can feel the effects of this amazing food even with smaller dosages, so take it easy at first. You can have too much of a good thing after all.

The powder is especially useful because it can be used in numerous ways. Spirulina can be added in a variety of recipes of salads dips and sauces. It is an excellent addition to your green smoothies! You can also use it in various homemade snack bars, wraps and spring rolls. You can of course use it in facial treatments. In most recipes, one tablespoon of spirulina powder is enough.

    1. @Regis : yes of course we still count a significant number of stunted children in our country
so let’s react to get to handle this challenge wlkm again

  32. You did a great job Mr Felix, super proposal, if selected we will get benefit especially here in our Region, All the best dear

  63. SPIRULINA IS NOT NU IN RWANDA
    Spirulina project to combat malnutrition
    by Ariel Kedem • February 9, 2016 • 0 Comments

Attendees tasting spirulina for the first time

Attendees tasting spirulina for the first time
POPOF has recently teamed up with two organizations from Israel – “Africa 2030″ and JustSpirulina – who are developing spirulina projects to combat malnutrition in Africa.

In September 2015, ten members of POPOF and Centre de Recherche en Science Naturelles (CRSN Lwiro) participated in a spirulina training in Kigali, Rwanda and they are now launching the spirulina production project in DRC. The first locale will be at CRSN Lwiro and the following locale will be in Miti village, next to Kahuzi Biega National Park.

This is an important effort to support communities who live in close proximity to protected areas inhabited by gorillas and other wildlife. Furthermore, once the project expands, spirulina, which is the most nutritious food nature has to offer, can serve as an alternative to bushmeat consumption.

    Note:
Spirulina is a micro-algae, which is the richest whole-food source nature has to offer. Spirulina contains unusually high amounts of protein, between 60 and 70 percent. In addition, it includes nearly all essential fatty acids, minerals and vitamins, and is easily digested and assimilated by the human body.

Spirulina has proven results in battling malnutrition and malnutrition-related diseases. The effects of Spirulina are remarkably fast. Just to give you an example, children that participated in a clinical feeding study in Farende, Togo, were brought by their mothers from the surrounding countryside and given one tablespoon of Spirulina a day (mixed with water). Within a week – just a week – they began to gain weight and show signs of health improvement.

  64. Our Kigali Project

In partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in Rwanda (FAORW), the Rwandan Ministry of Youth & ICT and the City of Kigali, we implemented our first field project in Kigali, Rwanda, “Promoting the Nutrition of Children: We Are the Future (WAF).” Here, we work to improve the food security and nutrition of vulnerable populations, such as Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC), mothers from low-income households, and those affected by HIV/AIDS. We are also piloting the first community-run Spirulina farms in Africa. This protein-rich seaweed is defined as a “super food” by nutritionists for its nutritional benefits.
    College Saint Andre
Spirulina (or Arthrospira) is a blue-green alga that grows naturally in tropical and subtropical lakes with high pH and carbonate/bicarbonate concentrations. Due to the ease with which it is grown, harvested and processed, as well as its high nutritional value and proven results in combating malnutrition and malnutrition-related diseases, it has been endorsed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO).
    Rwandan Orphan’s Project

The first community based Spirulina micro-farm was set up at the Rwandan Orphans Project in the sector of Kanombe, district of Kicukiro in Kigali, which hosts 100 Orphans and Vulnerable Children, living below the poverty level. We taught children at the orphanage about Spirulina cultivation and micro-farming. Ten children, have been appointed to co-manage the Spirulina pool, including stirring the Spirulina periodically as per the Spirulina growing protocol and being responsible for the upkeep of the pool. The harvested Spirulina will be used to supplement the childrens’ school meals.

The second Spirulina micro-farm has been set up at College Saint Andre, a high school in the sector of Nyamirambo, district of Nyarugenge, in Kigali, which hosts 825 secondary school students. Besides having invited one point person from the College to attend a training workshop we organized, we also conducted a training session for the students. We built a small green house equipped with Spirulina basinets, which will also be used as a training venue for the students.

Our third Spirulina micro-farm was set up at the Jali Health Center in the district of Gasabo. Community health workers were taught how to grow the Spirulina. Once the Spirulina is ready to be harvested, it will be included in training sessions aimed at pregnant and breastfeeding mothers and those with young children who are either affected by or at risk of chronic malnutrition or undernutrition. The training will focus on Spirulina’s health and nutritional benefits and how it can be easily grown and consumed in everyday recipes.

    1. @Eugene thanks i encourage youths to use the social media effectively as they are many kind of competition in the world which involved especially youths so keep sharing and searching for a kind of competion

    1. @lucien biensur essayer de faire des analyses sur les prix aussi ca coute moins cher en considerant des produits composantes en comparaison avec les viandes ou d’autres sources de proteines animales
      //////////////////////////

    1. @Prosper welcome again and involvement of the community improves the socio accountability of citizens into the implemented project at the household level

  65. tres interessant , mais il faut aussi faire des publicites sur les web Rwandais meme international , courage

    1. @Sylvestre of course it will be incorporated into the refugees camp located in Rwanda and outside the country thanks for ur suggestion

  66. The project looks great and can tackle the issues of malnutrition in children.
I think the budget is quite narrow and you may not achieve your vision.
I hope that you will get good sponsorship and even make it free coz the target group may not be able to pay for this wonderful product.and GOD bless you.

    1. @AEE KIGALI, thanks for your intervention for improving the livelihood of Rwandan citizens and i really appreciate it, there after once i succeed this competition , it will be a good start up but there after once failed i am developing the project which i will share with all stakeholders so that it should be integrated into their nutrition program
thanks again and keep voting me

    1. @Nkusi this project will involve cereals , legumes (soybeans) and spirulina
so all of those crops will be considered but specifically emphasizes on Spirulina
      welcome again

    1. @Nsapan union fait la force et puis continuer a poste vos commentaire sur le blog …..pour que nous puissions reussire et aider les vulnerables merci bcq

    1. @uwera thanks for ur suggestion spirulina is cultivated into water solution where we may use ponds, everything u may use to hold water and materials which prevent dissolution of materials into the solution, so there u should put different fertilizers , on the above found the convient solution for cultivating Spirulina

  67. @Fider welcome and actually i need more suggestion about spirulina cultivation as they are different ways for cropping so keep commenting .. bu emphasizing on technical attributes thanks

  68. @ ALL FELLOWS : RUN FROM SUCCESS STORY / RWANDA
    Meet YPARD Mentee: Honorine Uwera

Growing up, I didn’t dream to be an agricultural engineer. I wanted to be an engineer in science technologies, but it did not occur to me that I would be a professional agronomist. After finishing High school, I was at admitted the Higher Institute of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry to study agriculture. I was upset. I didn’t expect to study agriculture in my life. People close to me kept saying that agriculture is a good option but for me ,at that time I didn’t see the good in it.

Anyway, i went to study agriculture with a broken heart but day after day I came to realise how great agriculture is. In the end , i graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Soil and Water Management department, Faculty of Agricultural Engineering and Environmental sciences at ISAE-BUSOGO (Higher Institute of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry).

I am a young hardworking female committed to peace building, promoting team spirit in work place.Currently, i am on a temporary research assignment as an enumerator in SPIU LWH-RSSP Project which is under MINAGRI (Ministry of Agriculture and Animal resources), NISR (National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda) as enumerator on Seasonal Agriculture Survey and Laterite Ltd as enumerator on different project. I am part of the research community that is studying the trends and quality of food to provide data to policymakers to improve food safety.

Position: Enumerator (independent research) at MINAGRI/SPIU LWH-RSSP-FRDP, NISR (National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda) and Laterite Ltd

  69. SUCCESS STORY FROM THE YPARD OFFICER
    KEEP SHARING

29 Aug 2015 by Michelle Kovacevic

Julius on the Nasco Farm Fresh

It’s been two months since Noah M. M. Nasiali and Julius Makanga embarked in their YPARD mentor/mentee relationship. Learning from each other doesn’t only imply long discussions – it means observing, testing and experiencing together.

Noah invited Julius to his business – Nasco Farm Fresh – for their first “one on one” meeting – a crucial milestone in YPARD mentoring program. This enabled Julius to have some first “feel” at Noah’s farm – farming being his long term goal.

During his visit, Julius got his first-hand training on greenhouse management, with specific interest in growing & managing tomatoes in the greenhouse. He learned about fumigation and crop rotation within the greenhouse as well, and about how to market fresh produce (french bean, bullet chillies, ravaya) for export. In addition, he collected invaluable tips on growing organic green vegetables, beetroots, as well as tissue culture bananas.

“Something that we wanted him to benefit from the most was land preparation,” Noah said, “such as basin/furrow making & watermelon farming and using hydroponic barley as an alternative to feeding improved kienyeji chicken.”

In particular, Julius brought back home experience in growing alternative “useful” weeds as a pest control measure.

“We at Nasco Farm Fresh are happy to have hosted Julius for the four days that he has been with us and we are looking forward to helping him achieve his [farming goals],” Noah said.

Noah is grateful to the YPARD pilot mentoring program for the opportunity to mentor young people who are embracing agriculture.

Julius had this to say of the YPARD mentoring program:

“I want to appreciate YPARD for fostering a change in my life by linking me to my Mentor Noah Nasiali. I managed to pay a visit to Noah’s farm in various locations in Kitengela, Athi River and other places where we shared a lot of knowledge and experiences on his farm.

I was amazed by how he could employ managerial skills on his farms and the workers by networking and co-ordinating different activities on his various farms. For the first time, I have learnt how to spend one’s day economically as every hour in Noah’s life is an opportunity to invest and make money.
Its completely wonderful, to see such a skill of diversification of different horticultural crops in his farm at different stages coupled with beef cattle and local improved chicken of which I acquired alot of knowledge and some ideas.

I have been challenged by how he manages his farms in such a semi-arid zone through irrigation in Kenya “

  70. FAO INTERVENTION IN Rwanda for food security and agriculture sustainability
    FAO Activities in Rwanda

Currently, FAO is working with the following activities in Rwanda:

ONE UN JOINT PROJECTS IN RWANDA

UNJP/RWA/029/WFP –Effectively Fighting Chronic Malnutrition in Two Districts in Rwanda

    Objectives:

The long-term goal of this intervention is to eliminate malnutrition in Rwanda. This will be achieved by aiming at the following expected outcomes:

    i. A 5 percentage point reduction in stunting (chronic malnutrition) per year among children under the age of 2 years, and;

ii. 30% reduction of anaemia prevalence on children under 2 and 20% reduction of anaemia prevalence among pregnant and lactating mothers in the two districts of Rwanda during the three years of implementation.

UNJP/RWA/030/CEP –Accelerating Stunting Reduction Amongst Under-Two Children in Rwanda

    Objectives:
