My name is Sally Musungu, a 26 year old agri-food researcher and farmer from Busia County, Kenya. I am looking forward to set up a vegetable oil extracting plant -Tropical Oil Plant in my County. Busia County is a production zone for sesame, soybean and groundnuts. These seeds have very high percentage of oil but are normally sold as grains with hardly any value addition being done on them. Oil from sesame, soybean and groundnuts fetch higher market price and have low cholesterol level.
Absence of vegetable oil pressing machine hinders oil extraction process. Tropical Oil Plant aims to install oil extraction machine in central production zones of Busia County. Farmers will be assured of ready market for their oil crop produce as well as obtain affordable cholesterol free oil from the company.
Market price for the D-1688 oil extracting machine ranges from $3000 to $3500. Initial purchase of raw materials plus installation of machine will require $1500. Tropical Oil Plant therefore requires initial capital of $5000 for the enterprise to be operational.
The business venture will provide job opportunities to youth in the area who will be employed to collect raw materials, extract oil and market final products. Our products will be different from the one in the supermarket as it will be affordable and will contain no preservatives.
Furthermore, consumers will be encouraged to bring their own containers and purchase oil from local oil dispensing machine and this will further make our cooking oil more affordable (packaging cost will be cut down) and consequently curb environmental pollution by reducing plastic waste disposals thus contributing to sustainable economic growth of Busia county, Kenya.
