I am Adnan Arshad, a 27 years old young Pakistani Agriculturist and Environmentalist, post-graduated from PMAS-Arid Agriculture University. I am young agripreneur and have start earning from agriculture farm when I was only 24 years old. Along with my graduation I did a lot of research work on climate adaptive food crops, forest plants species, seasonal and off seasonal vegetables farming and fruits plants. Got seeds and plants from different research stations and experimented it with different replications and sowing patterns to check their climatic adaptability. The region where we living and working is totally rain-fed and there rainwater is the only source of water for drinking, domestic purposes and agriculture.

Changing climate, nutrient scarce soils and uneven rainfall pattern makes this region more vulnerable to prolong droughts and food insecure for small farmers particularly for young growers. Keeping in mind these facts and on the basis of expertise’s I started climate smart diversified agriculture model farm with very low capita in March, 2011. I have started agripreneurship from 1-acre of cultivated land and divided it into four sub-plots; 1) Grapevine yard 2) Citrus orchard 3) Seasonal and off-seasonal vegetable 4) Poultry farm.

Grapevine yard have more than 160 plants of four climate adaptive varieties (cardnor, perlit, king roobi, black NARC) and started bearing fruits after two years of plantation. In citrus orchard we have 80 plants of different citrus varieties (seedless oranges, sweet lime, red blood, grape fruits) and it starts bearing fruits after three years. We have secure our continues earning source with seasonal and off-seasonal vegetable production at our farm, this plot also helped me a lot during very first years when grape yard and citrus orchard were not ready for fruiting.

Now, we are earning from grapevine yard and we are the only organic producer practicing environmental friendly farm operations. There is no compromise on farm produce and plants sustainability, seasonally during dormant period we practicing grape yard training/pruning and raise nursery of more than 1000 plants annually. Farm monitoring and replantation is going on throughout the years. In small portion of the farm we have poultry farm of traditional chickens which also support us to generate income to run other sustainable farm operations. We have Farmer Seed Bank with all required facilities and equipment to store quality seed for batter crop production. Every year our farm organizes different events for women and youth farmers about introduction of new varieties, celebrate world water day and awareness sessions.

Farm remain open all the time for local community visitors, we also organizing regular demonstration visits of locals farmers, students and youth groups to motivate them to start their own agriculture farm. All farm produce is 100% organic according to IFOAM standards and free from all type of chemicals and GMOs. More than 35% of farm produce is sale out in local community on very flat rates lower than the market rates and 60% of the produce yield is transported to the capital city to sale out at Go Organic Farmers Market where we get good price and customer response. This farm also providing new techniques, seeds and production methodologies’ to local community to replicate it along with a platform to share their issues.

I have six years of academic and agriculture research background which always push me to take initiatives to started my own project because I always takes interest in agriculture farming with conserved rainwater. I always believe on practical earning as compare to theoretical thinking. Initially, we have faced shortage of rainwater leads to prolong droughts due to extreme weather conditions but my motivations helped me to develop rooftop rainwater harvesting for our agriculture farm.

My aim is to start my own agriculture farm and develop it according to the climate smart adaptation practices. I also intend to develop farm as role model for other youth to replicate is as success case study for their batter livelihood. All technical work has been done by myself i.e. soil testing, preparation, annual work planning, rooftop rainwater harvesting source, composting, mulch, sowing to harvest and marketing along with varieties experimentation to the climate adaptation process.

Our agriculture farm is the role model for the all the community groups and they are trying to replicate it. I am also supporting them to start small vegetable and fruit farming farm with available income. During this project I learned and earned a lot and did my post-graduation study and successfully completed my degree. During the project I invented bio-sand filter for cleaning of water along with he introduced Moringa seeds for rainwater purification. I delivered more than 152 capacity building trainings to the farmer community especially women and youth. The measurable strength is to develop youth climate adaptive policy to engage youth to play their effective participation for sustainable agriculture development and acclimate agriculture as profession.

Currently, I am facing some energy and water loss issues at farm to irrigate it during higher temperature of summer with efficiently. Due to energy crises we have to face difficulty to run water pumping system to irrigate the whole farm, so with 55% of the budget will install green energy solar power system at farm which will be enough to run all the power operations of farm. High temperature causes big water loss from direct irrigation so 25% of the budget will be planned to install Zero Gravity Drip Irrigation system at farm to enhance the water holding capacity of the soil. Remaining budget will be utilized to get new rootstock and pruning tools for farm. The time frame of this proposed development will be one year with monthly updating reports and photos.

  1. This is a wonderful work to cope climate change and it is the need based things which we urgently needed in Pakistan.so i have a question that, are you creating awareness among youngsters to adopt agriculture as their entrepreneurship?

    1. thanks for your appreciations, yes I am doing awareness sessions for youth and women particularly jobless young people who have cultivated land but they not willing to do agriculture due to adverts climate change. So i am doing my level best.

  2. very important work you are doing in the water less region of Pakistan along with earning source. This is a good role model for other young entrepreneur to adopt it as profession. Is there any crop modeling skill tool are you applying at farm to deal with extreme climatic events?

    1. yes, I have developed some skill scores for crop modeling like early weather information system, irrigation scheduling according to the rainfall and little bit application of Crop-Wat model. To deal with extreme climatic event I we are applying climatic adaptive crop rotation with zero tillage practices. Safflower is the best climate adaptive crop for the rainfed regions of Pakistan and all over the world.

  3. You have done a remarkable work in rainfed agriculture i found this project very useful and fruitfull for the furture development of Rainfed Agriculture.
I wish you a very good luck for your future 🙂

      1. Good thinking and initiative Adnan Mechanization can attract the youths who are in abroad and the best alternative to reduce human hunger. Simultaneous effort on machinery demonstration on field and awareness through mass media could assure the rapid mechanization in Pakistan.

  4. Hey Adnan Here are some questions which raised in my mind after reading your artical i hope i can get Answers from you.
1: As you mentioned about four varities of orange in your artical Why these varities start fruit bearing after 3 years is there any Enviornmental barrier in this.?
2: What type of compost you use during your Research work.?
3:What is bio sand filter Did you Found it more Reliable than other comercial filters found in the Market..??

    1. 1.Dear Dr. Ahmad, Yes there are some biotic and abiotic barriers we have faced during early growth of these progressive citrus varieties like weeds, water shoots, nutrient deficiency and attack citrus mites but we deal all of these with biological agents.
2.natural compost prepared by leaves and farm straw, trash paper of office, wood chip, mixture of farm yard manure and poultry manure, I have applied it into the soil after the complete decomposition of two month period.
      3. it is environmental friendly and have very economical price as compare to other commercial water filters, and you know well in the rain-fed ares most of the communities are small farmers so its very difficult for them to buy expensive filters, and most of the villages have not electricity.

  5. Dear Adnan Arshad i am happy for you while you are a student and doing agriculture farming with your community. What type of water conservation techniques your are applying on farm?

    1. A. Rain Water Harvesting

      1) Roof rain water harvesting

      2) Courtyard rain water harvesting

      3) In situ rain water conservation/harvesting through catchment management

      4) Pond development

      B. Site specific Agricultural practices suitable for the area

      C. Kitchen Gardening with mulching to conserve water

Pitcher planting (an earthen pot/pitcher is buried in the soil and filled with water. This pot releases water in the soil slowly. Some spreading plants are grown around it.

  6. Well Done Arshad, I am proud of you being a Pakistani you are really struggling hard in that environmental conditions. Keep it Up. I would like to give more suggestion with respect to drought conditions of prolong dry season in the area during April to JUne each year.Try to apply bio char amendments in the soil. Make biochar from indigenous species of the area and try it . I am hopeful it will support growth as well as retain soil moisture. Moreover, Under climatic change scenario follow IPCC guidelines to sequester more carbon from the atmosphere under UN REDD program or CDM. For this you can consult Inspector General of Forest Ministry of Climate Change. Make assessment of Carbon stocks with third party and earn more money by selling carbon credits. I really appreciate your efforts.
Pakistan need Individual like you to come up to the expectations of the Nation…………….At least away from all politics, castism and other social issues……………..WELL DONE baby………..

    1. Thanks Professore Nizami: for your suggestion and valuable comments. I will experiment biochar at farm. I am following little bit IPCC guidelines and reports about climate change and CDM programs. I will contact with Inspector General of Forest Ministry of Climate Change and will do detail assessment of Carbon stocks. Can you please recommend me some consultant as third party for this assignment? I will be very grateful to you sir.

    1. Thanks Saira Khalid, this farm also providing new techniques, seeds and production methodologies’ to local community to replicate it along with a platform to share their issues.

  7. well done my boy, Adnan Arshad. I have always admired your work. This is a great step at this level. I wish you all the success in your endeavors. It will not only sharp your skills but also improve the knowledge of the local community. keep it up

    1. The measurable strength is to develop youth climate adaptive policy to engage youth to play their effective participation for sustainable agriculture development and acclimate agriculture as profession and i am promoting it among locals.

  8. Wow…What a great initiative. Yes it is very true implementing theory to practice not only gives much more satisfaction but also proves to be tremendously helpful for Society and Country. Having good Agriculture Academics background and at the same time pursuing farming is great combination.

Many congratulations for developing the climate smart model as it is the need of an hour for the well being of all .

My best wishes are always with you. Keep going ahead.

    Nikki Pilania Chaudhary

    1. Thanks for your words as professional You know Nikki due to climate change the wet periods have shortened and the dry periods have stretched in the area, thus water is sometimes received in short torrents that causes erosion and run off, resulting in loss of soil erosion, soil nutrients and precious water.
The average annual rainfall in the area is about 450-550 mm. by using different rainwater harvesting techniques water resource development. Monsoon (from July to September) is the foremost source of rainwater which receives about 70% of the total rainfall and remaining 30% is received during winter months (from December to March). The rural community has small and scattered land holdings. The main stay of economy of these people is rain-fed agriculture and traditional livestock rearing. The overall per-capita income is less than$1,386 (Annual Report 12-2013).

  9. Dear Adnan I am very glad to know about your recent research work in agriculture field. Keep it on and wishing very good luck for you.

  10. hi Adnan, you are very active environmentalist. I ma proud of you. you have much experience in agriculture and climate change and performed well in different applied projects. Now a days its a big problem for Pakistan that facing problem of water loss not only in agriculture but also in different domestic ways. I really appreciate your efforts.

    1. Thanks Dr. Kamran: In Pakistan Monsoon (from July to September) is the foremost source of rainwater which receives about 70% of the total rainfall and remaining 30% is received during winter months (from December to March). Temperature is increasing beyond its normal limits due to global warming and also because of non-environment friendly human (anthropogenic) activities. The underground water is scarce, water table too deep, and brackish contains other pollutants due to nearby oil and gas exploration activities. Consequently by using the problematic water the people of the area, particularly women, children and old males are suffering from various diseases of digestive track, hepatitis, cancer, eyes and skin damage.

  11. Well Done Arshad, You arr doing very good job . I am proud of you being a Pakistani you are really struggling hard in that environmental conditions. Keep it Up. I would like to give more suggestion with respect to drought conditions of prolong dry season in the area during April to JUne each year.Try to apply bio char amendments in the soil. Make biochar from indigenous species of the area and try it.

  12. Dear Adnan Arshad you are doing a remarkable work in rain-fed agriculture i found this project very useful and fruitful for the future development of Rain-fed Agriculture. i read your all project as you describe above i really appreciate your work good job.

  13. Dear Adnan Arshad you are doing very good job.well done boy i am very glad to know about your research work.In rainfed area this work is very usefull.Recently Pakistan is facing water losses so i hope this project will be very helpfull for Rain-Fed Agriculture areas in Pakistan. Many Many best wishes

    1. Dr. Fahad thanks, yes since 2010 Pakistan is facing extreme climatic events in term of drought, floods and heat waves which are not good indications about our rain-fed areas and agriculture professions. thats why farmers are not getting good price of their production.

    1. this all about the quality food production for our-self and our communities free from all type of chemicals and GMOs. IT will help me, you and all to get protection from diseases….

  14. Very well Mr.adnan. your work is really splendid and it is a source if motivation for young agriculturists. Keep it up.whish u better luck for your developmental and upgradation plans.

  15. Well done, I am proud of you. You are really v.hard struggling in that environmental conditions. how you are dealing with drought?
This is a great step (Adnan). I wish you , all the success in your endeavors. My best wishes are always with you.
    Well done my dear!

    1. We are dealing with drought with application of organic mulching, rooftop rainwater harvesting and micro-catchment development structures to conserve maximum rainwater in rainy season and I also improving soil organic matter and green manure cropping production. We are also growing drought tolerant crop and vegetable varieties which are performing well again drought. Thanks dr. Saleem.

  16. Not at all right now, because GIS and Remote Sensing needs very special tools and soft wears. I am doing farming with no external funds, we have very limited funds but we are really looking for to apply those at rain-fed areas.

  17. Good work Adnan Arshad keep it up…………..
but I have some suggestions and questions for you……….
    Suggestions…….
    i) you are running short of capital then you can take an interest-free loan from the bank or any other organizations as many banks introduce the interest-free loan scheme and many NGO’s offers financial support to the people.
ii) you also say that you face problem regarding the shortage of water in summer season then I suggest to use solar energy pump system, an only initial cost is required to develop the system and not a single rupee will invest in future for the irrigation……………I attended the 11th professional training workshop regarding this system and I have all the data which I can share with you if you want to develop that system I found it very useful and it is more efficient in summer season as you say you face shortage in summer season…………
    Questions…….
i)I also want to develop a farm of off-season vegetable production but I have not any guidance and experience I want to ask about the cost and arrangements for establishing a farm…?????
ii) I belong from the area which is irrigated and there is not any shortage of water throughout the year kindly tell me what vegetables and fruits are suitable and economically benefit me……….and please note my area is a subtropical irrigated with sandy loam soils pH ranges from 6.5-8.5…………….i am waiting for your answer…………..
    Thanks

    1. Thanks for very detail suggestions about interest-free loan from the bank or any other organizations as many banks introduce the interest-free loan scheme and many NGO’s and I have planed to install in summer season solar energy pump system, May be from the selection of this project I will spend specific funds for the installation of solar energy pumping system.

    2. Dear Sajjad Khan I will support you and your farm and give you all the field support to develop a climate smart farm, for one acre of land there will be around 2000 $ initially cost is required for the seasonal vegetable farming but for the off-seasonal vegetable farming it will be increased upto 5000-6000$.
thats great you have a water on field with good fertile soil and organic matter so you can grow all type of winter and summer vegetables at your farm for the summer you have to start it write now under the plastic tunnel I will email you all about the work plan of farm for vegetable farming. you have to keen vigilant about the extreme weather climatic conditions and frost as well.

you can contact me at+923143313550 or write at adnan.poda@gmail.com

  18. NIce work ..Even we are trying to same thing. I would like to know know list of plant species that you found to be adaptive in drought or very less water.

    1. Yes we are doing and trying to the same things and model to cope with adversest climatic conditions in South Asia particularly our countries Pakistan, and Nepal. I am requesting you to come up for regional collaboration for weather data sharing and to develop management tools to deal with clanging climatic conditions.

  19. Dear Adan your services are rremarkable in the field of agriculture and climate protection…keep it up

    1. No, at our farm we strongly discourage GMOs and others like this, we always believe on biodiversity with traditional way, thats we are empowering rural communities to store their good quality seed of all crops and vegetables with integrated approaches and practices.

      1. its surprising you discourage GMOs . By GMOs at least we able to feed more peoples .Every five seconds a child dies because of hunger.854 million people worldwide do not have enough to eat, more than the combined populations of the United States, Canada and the European Union.

  20. Adnan, You are doing great. Its need of future and i hope your work will give good outcomes to our country. Hope for good future dear…

  21. Here l want to ask you that how are you dealing with drought and nutrient deficiency with changing climate and shift in rainfall in Pakistan

    1. Dear Abdul Rehman; to grow under drought condition we apply the organic mulching, rooftop rainwater harvesting and micro-catchment development structures to conserve maximum rainwater in rainy season and I also improving soil organic matter and green manure cropping production. We are also growing drought tolerant crop and vegetable varieties which are performing well again drought.

  22. Here l want to ask you that how are you dealing with drought and nutrient deficiency with changing climate and shift in rainfall in Pakistan and particularly in rain fed areas of Punjab

    1. The average annual rainfall in the area is about 450-550 mm (Met data 2014). Monsoon cycle (from July to September) is the foremost source of rainwater which receives about 70% of the total rainfall and remaining 30% is received during winter months (from December to March). By using different rainwater harvesting techniques water resource development at small level has been done in the rain-fed areas of Punjab.

  23. Dear Adnan i read your work and found it very effective in capacity building of yourself and also of others. I just want to ask that you are practicing agriculture totally on organic basis on your farm? Vegetables are of very short duration crops and succulent so there are more chances of diseases and insect and pest attack so how are copping these issues by organic means? And i am happy that how you tackle the problem of water by collecting roof top rain water.

    1. Dear Umair, Yes, Initially we were applying integrated approaches to manage weeds, insect, pest and diseases at farm but with the learning and experiences we have learned so many biological control method to ensure 100% organic food at farm.
Yes you right vegetables have shore shelf life we discourage application of chemical, but if the insect or diseased reached up-to the thresh hold level we go for natural extracts of Neem oil, Moringa leaf extract and Koortumma (Citrullus colocynthis) which are good for all of the garden diseases and pests..

      1. Adnan its good to know that you are doing environmental friendly agriculture and also trying to ensure production on sustained bases. I just want to share that i had grown mung bean crop in the area where you are practicing now and also at NARC. Due to changing in climatic episodes i analysed the weather forecast and planned to sow crops on at different time intervals rather than conventional time of sowing. That helped me a lot in getting maximum yield due appropriate precipitation at critical time period. So i also advised you to do that for your vegetable plot. You can contact me so i will share my data with you. my email is umair.muhammad240@gmail.com.

    1. We are applying and promoting Moringa seed powder for rainwater filtration at community level. The leaves are cooked and used like spinach, and they are also dried and powdered for use as a condiment
The seed cake remaining after oil extraction is used as a fertilizer and also to purify well water and to remove salt from seawater.

Cheap and easy source of water filtration and
      purification throughout the world

  24. Dear Sagrika there is Grapevine yard have more than 160 plants of four climate adaptive varieties (cardnor, perlit, king roobi, black NARC) and started bearing fruits after two years of plantation. In citrus orchard we have 80 plants of different citrus varieties (seedless oranges, sweet lime, red blood, grape fruits) and it starts bearing fruits after three years. We have secure our continues earning source.

  25. Congratulations dear Adnan you are really doing smart work to earn from agriculture farming with climatic adaptive best practices. Please apply green manure cropping for soil improvements

    1. In grapevine yard and citrus we are growing green manuring crops and legumenus crops for nitrogen enrichment into soil. at farm we also promoting inter cropping to get double advantage for our farm plants and soil to enhance the soil fertility and water holding capacity (whc).

  26. Really a great effort of you Adnan. People across Pakistan are now experiencing unpredictable rainfall, increased temperatures and changes to the seasons. Other changes vary by region, such as increased rainfall and extreme weather events in Sindh and decreased rainfall in Balochistan. The Climate Asia Report found that compared with the other countries in this study, Pakistanis feel most strongly that these changes are having a high level of impact on their lives now (there were around 4,000 respondents to the survey in Pakistan).

    1. you are right Mr. Asad. there is a need to create awareness and educate youth about Climate Change mitigation and adaptation to make resilience in public and private schools. This is also my main objective to create awareness among school going children and youth through awareness raising and education on climate change issues to become activist of change and participate in regional and national activities, monitoring and reporting on climate change issues and progress, as well as contribute to climate solutions.

I need your technical support in future project outreach

  27. Its really a great effort of you Adnan.

  28. Dear Mr. Adnan,
Happy to see your great devotion towards the environmental challenges faced by Pakistan right now and in future and motivating youth and women to work on this front.
So you can count me in those who has put its foot in the same area. I am writing you can email so please try to reply back.

    1. Your are welcome and its my pleasure to have you on board. together we can do a lot of work for climate change because due to increase in population deforestation disturbed the atmosphere and biodiversity of the area. Urban community also seriously facing adverts climatic changes, like high temperature index, heat waves, low air pressure with high humidity, Monsoon floods and extreme climatic events are the big challenges there.

  29. Good work Adnan, you are an inspiration for us who are trying to grow veggies and fruit in an organic manner. If you could advise me as how to prevent mites on my fruit trees. I used tobacco water and also tabacco mulched into the surrounding area. Help

  30. Assalamoalaikum
Being student of chemistry I know the extensive use of chemicals that may affect the agri industry so much.well in our country it is the most valuable work to develop such processes which are less chemically exposed also world is more turning towards organics so this is equally goid in that regards
Keep it up and stay blessed

    1. Thanks Ms. Dania, chemicals are not only harmful for our agriculture industry but also for our health because you know well most of the chemicals not degraded at higher temperatures and conditions.

  31. I want to add by saying that such processes which are adaptable with changing climate are very necessary because climate changes are happening very rapidly its very very good that we may be able to cope with it . And these type of researches are really helpful in this regard .
We are proud of such Pakistani researchers having so much talent and passion in their field
    Good luck

  32. Dear Adnan ! You are inspiration for the youth, your past contribution towards dryland agriculture and fodder/forages is just remarkable and i love to see your devotion towards agriculture.

    * I want to ask you about the yield ratio being produced at your farm and other commercial growers, whether the total yield produced at farm meet your requirement ??
    * In current situations which strategy is being used from your side to cope with the problems like insects, pests and diseases as it is difficult to mitigate such problems by organic means??

    1. Dear Dr. Malik;
Yes we are getting potential yield of grape and citrus since 2014 at farm. Our produce is organic and its price in the capital market is higher than the other grower because they are applying fertilizer and chemicals. Initially our yield is very much low due to higher fluctuation in temperature and onset of hail-storming but we have learned a lot from those experiences and getting reasonable income from the farm because we have multiple sources of income at farm.
we are applying biological extracts of different plants to reduce the attack of harmful insect and pest, even moderate hot water is a good source to kill aphids and jasids.

  33. Climate change has important implications for nearly every aspect of life on Earth, and effects are already being felt. on glaciers, plants, biodiversity sustainable remedies are different farming system like your work,,,,,, Highly appreciated

    1. Dear Hussain: Climate change is global but affects people locally, urban and rural community seriously facing adverts climatic changes, like high temperature index, heat waves, low air pressure with high humidity, Monsoon floods and extreme climatic events are the big challenges in target area. Climate change is one of the most serious challenges in Pakistan and particularly for highly populated areas of rain-fed regions and hitting agriculture directly.

  34. Brother you actually have nailed the process very well in this climatic region. Brother I my self got very inspired of your work after reading your proposal and want it to start in my friends barren land near Fatehjung. Kindly give your farm google mal location so that we can see it from here and visit. Kindly briefly tell me how you are collecting rain water and costs management?

    1. Thanks Abuzar Abdullah, Farm is located on Chakwal Jhelum road near Mulalyal Mughlan (The area lies between 33.00ºN to 73.14ºE) … I will support you to start a farm and help you to replicate these practices at your farm as well. At farm we are collecting rainwater with multiple techniques i.e micro-catchments structures development, mulching, increase soil organic matter and rooftop rainwater harvesting.
      Courtyard rain water harvesting
In situ rain water conservation/harvesting through catchment management
      Pitcher planting

  35. well done brother.I think this is one of the best method to solve some kind of environmental issues. And i am very much interested in this great task.Highly appreciated as an undergraduate of Forestry and Environmental Science.Keep it up

  36. Adnan, This is a great step at this growing level, as Pakistan require yours type of young generation for development. I wish you all the success in your endeavors. Please keep it up to success of our Pakistan. Best of Luck.

  37. Adnan: I hope you get all the needed funding, so that this pilot project can quickly be replicated throughout our country. We need an agricultural resurgence to offset the rapid urbanization we are experiencing, not only in the environmental context, but more importantly in the socio-cultural context.

    1. Yes I am looking for the further funding to develop mechanized irrigation for citrus and grapevine yard to minimize water loss from soil. We also thinking to replicate it in urbane areas as rooftop kitchen gardening and promotion of grow food as compare to grass gardens. our farm is a role model for the environmental context, but more importantly in the socio-cultural context for locals communities.

  38. This is the new future Adnan. I hope that this endeavour will take new heights most esp. to our generation – where health is at risk due to our eating habits. Moreover, you’ve touched another opportunity, which is to export than import agri-goods. Let’s go green and Live Green.

    1. Defiantly, organic food and fruits have good impact on human health and nutrition and this a new era of earning more income to from cultivation of organic food. People want to take care as compare to take medical treatment.

  39. good idea and that is suppose to be to all scholars of different university but why your budget expenditure analysis you used dollar currency why you didn’t use our currency so that it can be easy for others to understand

    1. Its is very simple to convert it into local currency and from local to $ currency. Mostly when we talk about global world we use & cost effective ratio of earning. $1=102 PKR

  40. A very timely and relevant project especially since we are now in the post antibiotic and climate change eras. I hope this pushes through especially the sake of the local farmers.

    1. It defiantly help the local farmers and young growers to adopt agriculture as profession. I am agree we are facing biotic and abiotic stress due to climate change.

  41. Adnan Good job…the fact that you did not only concern yourself with the profits but have the livelihoods of the women especially in mind is a game changer in farming right there.Coupled with a well thought out plan on the seasons..

    1. You are more welcome to visit our farm and adapt it as success replication to cope climate change extreme events. this is a initiative for our own employment and present it as role model for other young peoples and unemployed youth living in rain-fed region of Pakistan and all over the world.

  42. In regard to the changing climactic phenomenon, agriculture land is turning to fallow land, snowcapped mountains to naked black nugget, scarcity of food & water. Countries like us have less adaptive capacity to deal with, remain highly vulnerable, and thus need extra efforts to act.

    1. you are right Hengaju; we have to develop more simple techniques and practices to deal with those environmental changes and have to introduce resilience crop and fruit varieties. Meting of snow and prolong droughts are the main causes for water and food.

  43. aYou are inspiration for the youth, your past contribution towards dry-land and rain-fed agriculture and fodder/forages is just remarkable and i love to see your devotion towards agriculture. Are you promoting safflower oil seed crop which is good for climate change?

    1. Dear Dr. Ali; The global climate risk index (GCRI) 2014 has ranked Pakistan among the three most affected countries worldwide for three consecutive years by climate-related catastrophes. In communities that rely on their environments to provide basic food, water, and energy resources, the impacts of climate change can be devastating. Too much or too little water can decimate crops, create food shortage and force migration.
I have evaluated the best spineless safflower line which performed efficiently along with adapted to variable climatic conditions and promote low input production technology for edible oil production among rain-fed farming community to empower them for their batter livelihoods and food security.

  44. A safe, clean and child-friendly physical environment has emerged as cardinal for promoting holistic quality education that enables all children to achieve academic, moral and psychological excellence.

    1. Thanks Sophiengassa; sure all the model activities are clean, healthy, and economical for community and youth to build their capacity to adapt agriculture procession as employment. It will also reduce hunger and improve sustainable agriculture food production.

  45. Dear Adnan Arshad, i appreciate your efforts for Environmental Friendly Innovations which is necessary for improvement in crops and to save the nature.
In Pakistan, there is comparatively less awareness towards climate change so we need people which promote awareness and knowledge of nature in this country. i really appreciate your efforts in this sector.
Please continue your efforts for your country as well as for World.

    1. We are doing the same thing and took the initiative to create awareness towards climate change so our youth can be utilized in batter manners. we also promoting awareness and knowledge of environmental friendly activities in this country and all over the world.

  46. Brother, you are blessed with this kind of nutritious idea, there is a sayings that “necessity is the mother of invention” thus kind of a thing is a rear gem in our society.
    Thanks. Keep the flag flying

    1. thank you dear Ridwan; Your are welcome and its my pleasure to have you on board. together we can do a lot of work for climate change because due to increase in population deforestation disturbed the atmosphere and biodiversity of the area.

    1. Our model farm also facilitating and Improving understanding of the impact of global warming/climate on education systems, and on the educational opportunities and needs of marginalized and vulnerable groups such as youth boys and girls.

    2. Thank you. Dear Ahmad creating awareness among youth and women are the main objectives of our model farm. We believe that women and youth together can secure natural resources efficiently as compare to men and farmers.

    1. That helped me a lot in getting maximum yield due appropriate precipitation at critical time period. So i also advised you to do that for your vegetable plot.

    2. You can contact me so i will share my data with you. my email is umair.muhammad240@gmail.com.

    1. yes you are 100% right due to it sowing time, rate and technologies are different for different crops according to their micro-climatic conditions. Please share you findings with me I have sent you email adnan.poda@gmail.com
It will also help us to get maximum out put yield from our farm resources, I will also apply it on our kitchen garden and inter cropping fields aw well. Thanks for sharing this informative research with us.

  49. Dear Adnan you are truly doing a fantastic job you will going to be a model for all students of ARID AGRICULTURE.. keep doing hard work and also motivate young students which are just freed from arid to built a positive scope of agriulture research.

I appreciate ur views and work, humanity needs more persons like u to serve it. May God bless u a lot.

  51. smart work Dear adnan but i have few suggestion,,,
    1. You should sow such a crops which have low water required to mimimize the drought,,,,
    2. Focus on drip irrigation system to minimized water losses…. through drainage or evaporation,,,

    1. We are interested to install drip irrigation system but we have no more funding yet to go for the new development. we need $5000 for it, can you support us in?

  52. To over come drought problem you should rely more on fruit plants rather then vegetables,,,,,
Mulching is very indispensible to over come eva-tranipiration rate,,,

    1. We are promoting Olive plantation in Potohar region to ensure economic development and disaster mitigation. This action aims to increase the local production of edible oil in order to reduce the imports of edible oils. Further, it will generate direct and indirect livelihoods opportunities contributing to poverty alleviation by making use of conventional waste, marginal and uncultivated land and sub-mountainous areas. This olive plantation will be useful in increasing the cultivated land area that leads to food security sustainability, agro-forestry promotion and to mitigate the impacts of climate change.

  53. Good development done by the young agriculturist in Pakistan, really impressed from him. I want to share with you some findings of IPCC #5AR EG-3 via email. 133. My other question is that how can we improve and take proper care of this vegetables during extreme climatic events onset as these are one of the best model.

    1. There are different techniques to protect it from climate disasters like mulching with plastic and crop residues along with covering by biomass. Yes efforts need to be made to promote these techniques. Few State Governments are promoting among farmers.

  134. Yet another blog which is mind storming….

  145. Please help me to understand it; Agriculture Production under threat by Climate Change.
Climate Extremes (Drought, Floods and Heatwaves) cut global Cereal Production by 10% in 50 years
    Source: doi:10.1038/nature16467 Nature, 2016 ‪#‎JEAS‬‬

    1. Agriculture in Pakistan is highly vulnerable to climate change because there is no other source of water for crops in rain-fed areas. Too much rain and no rain is the more drastic situation for low production,

  146. adnan; work with plants to pull nitrogen from the air. They turn the nitrogen into a form the plant is able to use. In return, the plant lets the microbes eat some of the sugars it makes.

  147. We always talk about youth are lacking of interest in agriculture, what if we are well informed and even experienced the beauty of agriculture? This opens a door for the children, the future youth. Good idea.

  148. A very timely and relevant project especially since we are now in the post antibiotic and climate change eras. I hope this pushes through especially the sake of the local farmers.

    1. This is the only kind of project in this area to help farming communities to build resilience among the youth and linked them with modern agriculture.

  149. Adnan at present not only our country needs these steps rather, whole world can get benefited through such initiatives. A very good concept Adnan i wish you best of luck with your work. Best wishes for you.

    1. Thanks you thanks Nizami brother. Defiantly It will be more innovative and modern for our youth after the completion of this smart water irrigation system.

  150. I hope people realize your good-will, and motivation and help you with whatever they can. This is a small lamp which can light the whole country. Best wishes!

    1. More than 350 families are getting benefit initially, we are facilitating them with 30% share of our farm products on very economical rats. It will be more wider………../

  151. However, I do have one suggestion. You should try to engage more youths, specially from other agriculture schools and communities to come and help as volunteers in your project.

    1. Nawaz brother thank you very much for suggestions; I have no more extra funds to spend for this, but we are trying to get some funding for this component. We have all the training and awareness manuals for this activity.

    1. I am creating it for jobless youth here in my region, here are seven district and more than 60% population is consisted on youth age group 15-27. This is a model farm for the youth.

  152. This project is very timely and relevant to us. Indeed, there is a need to conserve native animal genetic resources as this is one of the best ways whereby we can address climate change-related problems.

    1. We will introduce climatic resilient animal farm in near future to build a model farm of it. Thanks ofr suggestion and noted well for further actions.

  153. Great job…the fact that you did not only concern yourself with the profits but have the livelihoods of the women especially in mind is a game changer in farming right there.Coupled with a well thought out plan on the seasons..

    1. Women and Youth are the two main target groups of us to motivate them, educate them and build their capacities for their sustainable livelihoods skills.

  154. Dear Adnan i would like to suggest that there should be awareness education component in your work. Since through similar projects local communities can raise more income instead of sowing only crops. The demand of organic fruits is high in Pakistan and people pay more money for organic fruits. So your project must have a community involvement component, in this way we can strengthen local communities and these activities can have a positive impact on their socio-economic conditions. I hope you will consider my suggestions. Best of luck.

    1. Dear Dr. Akrim: thanks for your detail and very prompt response on my work. Our project have the specific quota for locals and we are organizing monthly training and education sessions at our farm for community welfare. I noted all and thanks for all the suggestions.

  155. ur food choices are important and its tarts with how we grow it. Creating jobs is our responsibility. I know you are doing the same with your Media house! Keep it up!

    1. I personally know 23 youth and w12 women farmer who started their smart model farm, our expert helped them to install all those new techniques at their own farm, now they are earning money from it.

  156. I am very much sure the proposal of yours would definitely brings up in the top position in the discussions related to the climate change stress mitigation strategies and gets accepted for funding. Wish you all the best.

    1. We started it as a experiment and after that I expand it further to realizing for community and youth support. Because climate science is very new for youth involved in agriculture business.

  157. Good leaders guide people in achieving their task. I believe that if you develop well your project the World our country and your Village will benefit more. Luck luck!

  158. You arr doing very good job . I am proud of you being a Pakistani you are really struggling hard in that environmental conditions. Keep it Up. I would like to give more suggestion with respect to drought conditions of prolong dry season in the area during April to JUne each year.

    1. I need more funds and to install ore meteorological system for early warning system to inform youth farmer before the extreme climatic changes, like floods, rainfall and hail-storming..Thanks for the suggestions and comments to appreciating youth work.

  159. ery important work you are doing in the water less region of Pakistan along with earning source. This is a good role model for other young entrepreneur to adopt it as profession.

    1. It will be if selected for the further replication and installation to reach maximum youth entrepreneur to adopt it as profession and earn more with less input cost.

  160. .In rainfed area this work is very usefull.Recently Pakistan is facing water losses so i hope this project will be very helpfull for Rain-Fed Agriculture areas in Pakistan. Many Many best wishes

    1. More than two month drought for wheat crop is big stress for good grain yield and organic matter will enhance the soil water holding capacity for longer period time.

  161. This project is of crucial importance in terms of environment protection, climate change effects mitigation, as well as productivity increase thus achieving on sustainable development

  162. This project is perfect it will improve environment management by reducing amount of chemicals used as fertilizers and increasing use of organic ones.

    1. It will be more inserting when it will be facilitated with modern and efficient irrigation model at farm which will improve water use efficiency and conserve more water at farm. Thanks for support.

  163. This is a harsh reality that we are unable to disseminate latest technology/research to local farmers.
I really appreciate this project with very productive outcome.

  164. Great thought adnan. I agree with you that any business particularly agri related should take into account the local conditions. I am sure your efforts will make a meaningful contribution

  165. Try to improve it by using agricultural extension systems. It may be more efficient. Moreover, this project will play an important role in fighting against malnutrition

  166. This is a very relevant project for the local native crops raisers: an answer to increase their income despite the problems brought about by climate change

  167. Maximizing our very own resources helps our farmers especially. We mustn’t let foreign products overpower local ones. Great job on this! I hope this bears fruition soon!

  168. I see this as a total game changer for the agricultural aspect since we mainly rely from what the media or the mass say that is good. Goodluck on doing so

  169. This is a very nice proposal! If you win I hope that this idea would be known all-over the country! But for the mean time, I’d like to ask, how many of the farmers do you plan on training, as said on the second-year layout?

  170. And what will you do to convince them to join you on this venture? What could they possibly gain during the training (ex. Incentives such as payment, etc.)?
    Thank you!

    1. Thank you so much for your comment and suggestions; They will learn modern techniques, weather information, agronomic practices and marketing.
Please request your friends to comment on our proposal, support us to make this real!

    1. Thanks for your wonderful sharing of information. Yes, we are also growing from same level. We used to share based on our knowledge and experience by thinking, it might be good for beginners.

    1. Thanks for sharing the facts and figures. I have started this project three years back and now looking for its replication and improvement for others particularly climate vulnerable women and youth groups.

  171. we should have some effort for manufacturing environmental friendly things in every field of production, as i have participated in this effort by producing a new surfactant that is biologically degradable after its application to textile production sector.

  172. From a climate justice perspective, addressing the root causes of the climate crisis also requires tackling social inequalities and eradicating forms of oppression that movements can also reproduce, including gender inequalities.

    1. Thanks for your wonderful sharing of information. Yes, we are also growing from same level. We used to share based on our knowledge and experience by thinking, it might be good for beginners.

  173. This is awesome a concept. Further, you should come with the following;
    1) projected cost per unit,
    2)average selling price per unit
    2) Projected sales volume

  174. Really great idea, there is great demand of wine inside and outside the country. Since, our country farmers are compel to sell their produced orange at very low rate, the industry like you have proposed will certainly going to respect the farmer handwork and motivate them for orange and Banana Cultivation.

  175. , I wish Best of luck for your Endeavor and future will help me to taste wine from your industry. My support and cooperation is always with you…

  176. ou can join in the publicity of improved mechanization in agriculture knowing this would attract more youth to agribusiness. Thanks for the motivation medalzwordpre

  177. Further, provided that the project will start relatively small, you can substitute the cost of the solar electric pump set to a fuel powered pump set until such a time

  178. u can join in the publicity of improved mechanization in agriculture knowing this would attract more youth to agribusiness. Thanks for the motivation medalzwordpre

    1. yes; My all the farm operations are climate adaptive and seed, fruits and crops are well adaptive to it. To minimize other extreme events I am practicing resistant varieties seed as well.

    1. I have started this project three years back and now looking for its replication and improvement for others particularly climate vulnerable women and youth groups.
      Thank you so much.

  179. The usage of modern technology in agriculture is the best way for mind set change among youths also it increases yield output and reduces stress.

    1. three years back and now looking for its replication and improvement for others particularly climate vulnerable women and youth groups.
      Thank you so much.

  180. Agricultural mechanization is a production technology. In some countries, different levels of mechanization and application development are available….. you are doing amazing job.

    love from India.

    1. Dear; youth are the our main target beneficiaries to deliver those smart climatic techniques. They will get more benefit from this project. Thanks for suggestion from India:

  181. In other words, mechanization in agricultural business depends on the technical and economic structure that is being implemented at different levels.

    1. My all the farm operations are climate adaptive and seed, fruits and crops are well adaptive to it. To minimize other extreme events I am practicing resistant varieties seed as well.

  182. you should utilizing the methods of learnt skills will be very effective in achieving this goal and will lead toward professionalism. All the best to the team for such a creative effort.

    1. initial cost for one acre farm is 500000-800000 but you can start it with low income with minimum land area. My all the farm operations are climate adaptive and seed, fruits and crops are well adaptive to it. To minimize other extreme events I am practicing resistant varieties seed as well.

  191. These days villagers cannot save money because they spent all income in exchange of their daily needs. Through such ideas, local communities can earn and save money as a part time work.

  192. Good effort brother keep it up. May Allah bless you. We need such ideas in every field. Good luck.

So we all must work in cooperation as big things can happen with a strong team.
I absolutely agree with you and compliment you for doing the right thing in Pakistani context.

The reason is they need too much care and hence becomes very costly for a farmer to take yield from them. The main reason is under hot weather they easily come into stress. Unless comfortable air cooled arrangements along with much higher nutrition requirements are fulfilled these crops just for not perform.

  245. Love your spirit in taking and Inspiring others to take path and employ methods which questions the typical mindset and culture. All the best for your new venture. Due to changing in climatic episodes i analysed the weather forecast and planned to sow crops on at different time intervals rather than conventional time of sowing. That helped me a lot in getting maximum yield due appropriate precipitation at critical time period. So i also advised you to do that for your vegetable plot.
